Q: Can gemmologists tell the difference between mined and lab?
No. Even experienced gemmologists cannot tell a lab-grown
diamond from a mined one with the naked eye or a loupe. Only
advanced laboratory equipment can determine its origin.
Q: Are lab diamonds rare?
Yes - especially at the highest grades. Premium-quality stones
require exceptional skill and precision to grow, and production is
limited by the capacity and sophistication of diamond-growing
reactors.
Q: Do they hold value?
Increasingly, yes. While all jewellery depreciates, resale trends show
that lab-grown diamonds often lose less value compared to mined
diamonds, making them a smarter, more future-focused purchase.
Q: Are they eco-friendly?
Yes. Lab-grown diamonds require signi昀椀cantly less water and
energy than mining, generate fewer carbon emissions, and avoid
the deforestation and ecological disruption caused by traditional
diamond extraction.
Q: Is there a difference in quality between lab-grown diamonds?
Yes. Just like mined diamonds, lab-grown diamonds are produced in
different qualities and graded using the 4C’s. Only 10% of lab-grown
diamonds are D-E / VVS+. Astrea only uses this quality and higher,
with an exclusive collection of D-IF diamonds which corresponds to
0.1% of mined diamonds in the world, and 0.01% of all mined and labgrown diamonds combined.
